Ingrown Toe Nail Surgery

Nail surgery is a simple routine procedure usually recommended when an ingrown toenail is chronic or a severe problem (or in some cases when a nail is excessively thickened or curved). It is performed in clinical setting with no need for hospital admission. Depending on how many toes are operated on, general length of time is between 30-45 minutes.

Generally there is 2 types of ingrown toe nail procedure;

  1. Partial Nail Removal (Partial Nail Avulsion): In most cases, only the part of the nail that is ingrown is removed. The doctor will cut along the edge of the nail and remove the affected portion.

  2. Complete Nail Removal (Total Nail Avulsion): In some cases, particularly if the ingrown nail is severe or recurrent, the entire nail may be removed.

Nail surgery is performed after using an injection of local anaesthetic to numb the toe. This will prevent any pain in the area.

After the torniquet is applied to the toe, to control bleeding. The offending section of the nail will be lifted from the toe & removed. A chemical is then applied to the nail bed & matrix (where the nail grows from) to stop the nail from growing back. Application of an antiseptic dressing is applied & discussion of your home dressing regimen will be implemented.

It is recommended that you rest for the remainder of the day & if possible for a day or two after the procedure.

Whilst rest is optimal you will be able to return to work/normal daily activities the next day

The local anaesthetic will wear off approximately 1 hour after the procedure. Panadol should be enough to prevent pain arising. Avoid Aspirin or Nurofen as these may prolong bleeding.

It is advisable not to drive after the procedure due to the effects of the anaesthesia on your toes. Please arrange a lift with a family member or friend.

As with any surgical procedure there are possible complications these include but are not limited to

  • Infection – if you follow your dressing instructions infection is rare. If you notice signs of infection such as pain, redness, heat, swelling or excessive pus then consult your GP

  • Regrowth – for a small number of clients the nail may regrow & further surgery may be required

  • Pain – there may be slight residual pain after the area has healed. This is especially likely if shoes are too tight.

The toe will usually take between 4 & 8 weeks to heal. This time is as individual as each person.
